What to visit in Viana do Castelo
Citania of Stª Luzia
The ruins of a fortified village of the Iron Age can be
found on the outskirts of Viana de Castelo, at the top of Santa Luzia hill. The
excavations uncovered unique polygonal houses, which prove that the Romans
occupied this village until the fifth century. This citizenship is also
classified as a national monument.
Weight Spa
Located in a green valley forested and flooded by the sound
of running water, these hot springs are a quiet place with recognized
therapeutic potential. Mineral waters began to be used in the treatment of
various diseases since the late 1800's, including diabetes, obesity and high
cholesterol. Sprawling over 2 hectares, the thermal springs also comprise a
camping, bungalows, a mini golf course, tennis court and a café.
Castle of Melgaço
One of the most important military bastions along the
northern border of Portugal, this Roman castle was built in the 12th century and
later protected by a wall that connects it to the city. The only vestiges of the
medieval fortifications are the guard of the castle, part of the fort, three
towers and the north and west gates. The castle was classified as a national
monument in 1910 and the guard was transformed into a museum.
Mezio Megalithic Core
This prehistoric site is made up of a dozen megalithic
monuments that were used as tomb places in the Iron Age. Also known as Antas de
la Sierra del Soajo, the Megalithic Núcleo del Mezio is important not only for
its archaeological artifacts, but also for being a unique example of a
prehistoric funeral place.
Castle Santa Cruz
In the old town of Vila Fonche, this strategically
positioned Roman castle was one of the first infrastructures to support the
human peoples in this area. Archaeologists discovered defensive functionalities,
including the existence of walls and foundations of a guard. The castle would
have been abandoned near the middle of the thirteenth century.
Monastery of Ermelo
Located along the Lima River, this former Benedictine
monastery was built in the 13th century and later used by Cistercian nuns and
monks. The temple later became a parish church. In spite of the damages suffered
throughout the centuries, the odd architecture of this monastery and its
cultural patrimony were recognized, being classified like national monument in
1977.
